Tanto as mechas quanto as luzes são técnicas cujos estilos têm resultados diferentes, mas são feitos do mesmo modo,com papel ou à mão livre, usando descolorante. As luzes são fininhas, mais discretas e proporcionam um resultado natural, como se as mechas tivessem sido clareadas pelo sol. Como são mais delicadas que outras técnicas de clareamento,as luzes ficaram populares principalmente para quem quer ficar loira aos poucos. Já as mechas são mais marcadas, podem ter diversas espessuras e ser feitas em diversos pontos da cabeça, se destacando da cor de base das madeixas. Apesar da diferença, as duas técnicas podem ser tonalizadas depois do processo de descoloração para criar versões diferentes de cada estilo, como o clareamento em degradê com as luzes e as mechas 3D, que misturam diversos tons de coloração para dar impressão de profundidade ao cabelo.
